Roof mounting

Many people may prefer to mount a solar system on their roof as opposed to stand-alone. It is possible to mount a solar array on the roof of your house or an alternative building, such as a garage.

This would not need planning permission, providing:

  • The solar array does not protrude more than 20cm from the roof slope
  • The solar array must not be higher than the highest part of the roof (excluding chimney)
  • If the building on which the array would be installed is in a conservation area, the array must not be visible from a highway
  • If the building is listed, the array must not be installed within the cartilage of the building
  • The array must be sited so as to minimise its effect on the external appearance of the building

Also bear in mind

The roof onto which the solar array is to be mounted must be strong enough to take the weight of the array, especially if being placed on top of existing tiles.

The roof onto which the array is to be mounted should ideally be south facing, or at least mainly southerly facing.

Mounting the array will require scaffolding, so final installation costs will be partially determined by the ease of access to the roof and proximity to the consumer unit in the house.

We can supply an array of differing size and/or output to suit your individual requirements. Please contact us for a custom quotation. We would be delighted to supply any sized system for your roof. Typical cost for a 1.8kW roof-mounted system, fully installed and commissioned, would be approximately £10,000.
